University of Chicago’s SJP hosts Palestine Day of Action

This press release was written by Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Chicago.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2015, Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Chicago and supporters participated in the International Day of Action on University Campuses for Palestine by launching a poster campaign in solidarity with victims of Israeli violence.

The posters, which can be seen around campus, include names and descriptions of Palestinians who have been killed by Israel in the past two weeks, when violence against Palestinians has escalated to a drastic degree. Many of those murdered were minors shot to death when Israel opened fire on protesters, in addition to other unarmed members of Palestinian society.

The campaign is part of an international effort on universities across the world to promote fulfillment of Palestinian human rights of freedom, justice, and equality. The day of action was called by Students for Justice in Palestine at UC Berkeley, who urged those in Palestine solidarity work to educate campuses on issues like the BDS movement, dynamics of the illegal Israeli occupation, violations of Palestinian human rights, and more.

We commemorate the lives of these Palestinians as part of the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians at the hands of the settler-colonialist, apartheid state of Israel. As an organization in solidarity with Palestinians, we call for an end to state violence against Palestinians. We also call for the end of the illegal occupation of Palestine, recognition of the fundamental rights of all Palestinian members of Israeli society to full equality, and protection and promotion of the right of return for all Palestinian refugees as stipulated by UN resolution 194.

The posters will remain as long as Friday. SJP UChicago encourages the student body and the campus at large to learn more about the victims and the wider context for their deaths, as well as the conditions of the ongoing illegal occupation of Palestine and the United States’ complicity in its perpetuation.
