Supporters prepare for decision on Rasmea Odeh’s appeal

Supporters prepare for decision on Rasmea Odeh’s appeal

* An earlier edition of this article reported that Rasmea’s Defense Committee was expecting a decision on Rasmea Odeh’s appeal this week. The updated article clarifies that the committee is just preparing for a decision.

The Rasmea Defense Committee released a statement calling on supporters to join a social media campaign to show support for Palestinian-American activist Rasmea Odeh, who is waiting on a decision on her appeal.

Last October, Rasmea’s defense delivered oral arguments to appeal her conviction of Unlawful Procurement of Naturalization because her original trial had been marked with bias and inconsistencies. Most notably, she was not allowed to testify about her post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and torture in Israeli prison.

According to the defense committee, Odeh’s fate could be announced “any day,” so supporters should be prepared for an immediate action.

Despite the defense committee’s confidence that Odeh will win her appeal, supporters are being asked to prepare for a worst-case scenario—Odeh being ordered to turn herself into federal prison authorities. On Wednesday, the Rasmea Defense Committee is calling on activists  to use sample tweets, hashtags, articles, and memes to show their support for Odeh.

They will also be asked to take to the streets and protest outside of federal buildings in the U.S. and U.S. embassies and consulates around the world in the event that a decision is made.

In the event that the decision is released before noon on—any given day—they are asking supporters to turn out at 5 P.M. the same day of the decision. In the event that the decision is released after noon, supporters are being asked to protest the following day at 5 P.M.
