Mahmoud Abdelfattah: A Palestinian you should know
Mahmoud Abdelfattah, the first Palestinian head coach in NBA G League history was hired last September by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, an affiliate of the Houston Rockets.
The former Vipers’ assistant found out about his promotion shortly after returning from hajj--the pilgrimage to Mecca required of every Muslim who can afford it.
He was informed after a dinner with Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and other “higher ups.” Palestine in America will feature Abdelfattah in next year’s sports edition.. We caught up with Abdelfattah on Dec. 7 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin following a loss to the Wisconsin Herd. He opened up about growing up in Chicago, how his dream of playing basketball professionally shifted to coaching and what it was like coaching internationally.
