Palestinian's You Need to Know: Donia Jarrar
Based in Los Angeles, Donia Jarrar is a composer, pianist, scholar and interdisciplinary artist. She holds a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Michigan. Growing up, led by her Palestinian father and Egyptian-Greek mother, Jarrar bounced from Kuwait to Egypt to the West Bank before moving to the U.S. Not unlike the many cultures she experienced, her music reflects multiple genres — from classical and electronic, to experimental and pop — all while maintaining her signature improvisation.
Jarrar’s most recent project is “Seamstress,” a multimedia documentary inspired by the oral histories of Palestinian women and girls. It was awarded an OPERA America Discovery Grant on April 1st.
Jarrar was originally highlighted in our Music Edition printed in March. You can order a digital or print copy here.
